Turkey Detains Mayor Who Won Conservative Stronghold
“Turkey detained a rising opposition mayor who wrested control of one of Istanbul’s most symbolically important conservative districts, widening a crackdown that has already reshaped the country’s political landscape,” Bloomberg reports.
During a raid, the CHP politician and five other people were arrested. She is the first opposition in the previously conservative district.
With Sinem Dedetas another CHP politician from Istanbul is in custody. The prosecution accuses her of corruption. Critics consider the wave of arrests to be politically instructive.

Turkish authorities detained an opposition Istanbul district mayor and five others on Wednesday over alleged irregularities in building and occupancy permits, broadcaster NTV reported.
Breaking news... An operation was carried out this morning as part of the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the Üsküdar Municipality. Six people, including Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, were detained in the operation.
