Tunisian police clash with protesters in capital on day of heightened tensions
Protesters blocked roads and burned tyres as anger over a custody death spread to southern towns and Sfax universities, officials and witnesses said.
On Thursday, Tunisian police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Ettadhamen, a suburb of Tunis, following the death of a man detained on suspicion of drug dealing.
Earlier on Thursday, security forces clashed with protesters in Jebeniana and Agareb after a man died during a security chase, prompting forces to fire tear gas while securing a National Guard station.
While the man's family alleged police violence caused his death, local media reported he died from swallowing drugs; protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and threw stones at security personnel.
Separately, students in Sfax protested Thursday over the death of a female student who suffered cardiac issues, with colleagues citing delayed ambulance arrival and poor medical facilities while calling for a faculty strike.
These conflicts coincide with a deepening economic and political crisis intensifying pressure on President Kais Saied, fueling fears of a wider wave of violent protests over deteriorating living conditions and poor public services.
