TUI Issues Urgent Message to May Passengers Amid Fuel Shortage Fears
TUI said it is monitoring Middle East fuel risks and expects no immediate disruption, even as industry leaders warn shortages could hit Europe within weeks.
TUI issued a statement on Thursday addressing passenger concerns, confirming the airline is "closely monitoring the developing situation in the Middle East" and is "not anticipating any immediate disruption" to flight schedules or holiday programmes.
Aviation experts warned Europe could face systemic jet fuel shortages if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, with International Energy Agency head Fatih Birol claiming the region has "maybe six weeks of jet fuel left."
Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary suggested disruption could commence as early as May, noting a "reasonable risk" that 10% to 25% of supplies might be at risk if the conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States continues.
Under Secretary Transport Keir Mather stated "there is no immediate cause for concern relating to fuel stocks," adding that The Government is working with airlines and airports to monitor jet fuel levels and pricing.
Airports Council International Europe cautioned that shortages are "set to become a reality for the EU" if stable passage through the Strait does not resume within three weeks, a concern compounded by the peak summer season.
