TSMC Is Open to Working on Musk’s Terafab but Says It Must Run the Fab
C.C. Wei said TSMC is discussing capacity with Musk’s chip venture as third-quarter revenue rose 41% to $46.7 billion.
- On Thursday, TSMC Chairman and Chief Executive Wei said the company is willing to work with Elon Musk's Terafab project, provided TSMC operates any fab involved. The two sides have not yet reached an agreement.
- Musk previously ruled out TSMC operating the plant, writing that Tesla and SpaceX would build and operate the facility themselves. He suggested TSMC could only sublease part of the project.
- During the call, JPMorgan analyst Gokul Hariharan asked about TSMC's expansion plans in Texas. Wei confirmed TSMC is scouting sites beyond its Arizona base to meet strong demand.
- TSMC reported third-quarter revenue of $46.7bn, up 41% from a year earlier, and expects $52.3bn to $54.3bn in the final quarter. Intel remains part of Terafab with Lip-Bu Tan confirming commitment.
- Wei did not provide a timeline for Terafab negotiations, stating TSMC will share updates once the two sides reach a firm conclusion. The project's first phase in Grimes County broke ground recently to supply chips for Musk's cars.
