TSA Scales Back PreCheck Benefit Announced Just Weeks Ago
The agency has returned Gateside by TSA PreCheck to its original 13-airport pilot, and Norfolk officials said 31 travelers used the pass in four days.
The Transportation Security Administration has quietly scaled back its 'Gateside by TSA PreCheck' program, removing Norfolk International Airport and others from the expansion list and returning operations to the original 13 participating airports.
Launched in September to allow non-travelers to access airport gates for send-offs and welcomes, the program expanded to hundreds of airports earlier this month. The agency reversed that growth within days without providing public reasoning.
Chris Jones, vice president and chief marketing and communications officer for the Norfolk Airport Authority, reported that 31 people utilized the gateside passes during the program's first four days at Norfolk. Jones stated the airport learned of the suspension only after receiving complaints from travelers.
TSA informed airport officials that the Gateside program is on hold indefinitely, excluding the 13 pilot locations. The agency has not responded to CNN's request for information regarding the sudden reduction in access.
The program is now limited to its original 13 airports, including locations like Denver International and Los Angeles International Airport. It remains unclear when or if the agency plans to revive the wider expansion efforts.
