Trump will sign order to create a U.S. Space Academy
The commission will recommend the academy’s governance, curriculum and location within 120 days, as the administration says it will serve Space Force and NASA.
- On Friday, President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order establishing a Space Academy. Speaking at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Trump said, "I will sign an executive order to begin the process of creating a new national academy. It's called the U.S. Space Academy. That's a big deal."
- Trump cited the "rapid growth of the Space Force and the commercial space industry" and expanding ambitions to the moon and "far beyond the moon" as inspiration for the new academy.
- The academy aims to train civilians and service members for roles within NASA, the commercial space industry, and the Space Force. Trump noted the need to "educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers, civil operators."
- Minutes after the announcement, the president awarded the Congressional Space Medal to the Artemis crew who flew around the moon earlier this year. Trump also planned to become the first president to call astronauts on the International Space Station from Mission Control at Johnson.
- The president plans to choose a location for the new Space Academy "very shortly," though he offered few other details regarding the facility's future operations or timeline.
