Trump Tells Supporters: ‘I Could Say The Stupidest Things And You’d Clap’
The remark came as polls showed weaker enthusiasm among some 2024 Trump voters ahead of the midterms.
- On Saturday, October 10, 2026, President Donald Trump told a rally crowd in Clarksville, Tennessee, that he could "say the stupidest things and you'd clap," drawing laughter and applause from his supporters.
- Trump made the remark while reflecting on his relationship with his audience, describing how a friend with "stage fright" asked how he manages daily speaking events, to which he replied that the "love in these rooms" makes it easy.
- A Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted between September 30 and October 5 found only 30 percent of his 2024 voters were "very enthusiastic" about the midterms, compared with 48 percent of voters supporting Vice President Kamala Harris.
- With the Nov. 3 midterms approaching, Trump urged attendees to treat the election as if he were on the ballot, as Republicans defend narrow congressional majorities in districts the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is targeting.
- This remark recalled his 2016 campaign comment about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue without losing support; Trump immediately qualified his Tennessee statement, insisting that he and his supporters focus on "things of common sense.
