Trump says Norway ‘sucks’ after Nobel loss
Trump renewed his complaint after Norway’s Nobel Committee chose Navi Pillay, saying he has stopped eight wars and deserves the prize.
- On Sunday, President Donald Trump attacked Norway during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, calling it a "s**t house country" and declaring Norwegian immigrants unwelcome because the Nobel Committee denied him the Peace Prize.
- Trump has long coveted the Nobel Peace Prize, repeatedly pressuring the committee for the accolade while contrasting his diplomatic record with that of former President Barack Obama, who received the award in 2009.
- The committee awarded this year's prize to former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, prompting Trump to dismiss her as "a woman that nobody ever heard of" and label the decision "an indelible stain" on Norway.
- Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday, stating, "He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent," while reiterating that the government holds no influence over the selection process.
- Norway's sovereign wealth fund reported a record profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns for the first half of 2026, even as Trump's remarks echoed past disparaging comments about Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
