Trump says LeBron James disrespected US during national anthem
Trump said the video showed James disrespecting the anthem and demanded an apology, renewing a yearslong feud between the two public figures.
- On Thursday, President Donald Trump demanded an apology from Philadelphia 76ers star LeBron James, calling him a "total disgrace" for practicing golf and shooting motions during the national anthem at the October 20 season opener.
- Escalating a long-standing feud, this incident dates back to 2017 when James labeled Trump a "bum" after the president withdrew a White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors' championship celebration.
- Footage from the October 20 game at Madison Square Garden shows James moving during the anthem, though he remained standing throughout. The 76ers overcame a 29-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106.
- James dismissed the president's criticism, telling reporters after Thursday's victory it "must have been a slow news day at the office," while Sixers coach Nick Nurse downplayed the backlash as "outside noise."
- Athletes have frequently used anthem performances as political flashpoints, from Colin Kaepernick's 2016 protests to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's 1996 standoff. The 76ers maintain focus on team performance despite ongoing public debate.
