Trump says Israeli forces could resume fighting in Gaza ‘as soon as I say the word’ if Hamas won’t uphold ceasefire deal
- On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said he would consider allowing Israel to resume a military campaign in the Gaza Strip if Hamas fails to uphold ceasefire terms.
- The ceasefire is strained because Israel accuses Hamas of not handing over both living and deceased hostages, with all 20 of the living Israeli hostages returned but only four deceased hostages handed over and one possibly misidentified.
- So far the tenuous ceasefire has held and officials say the agreement is only Phase 1, with four to five more bodies expected this evening and humanitarian aid shipments at risk.
- Warning that Hamas must disarm, Trump said `we will disarm them` and he held back the Israel Defense Forces amid violent clashes with rival groups in Gaza.
- Amid broader diplomacy, Trump said Fifty-nine countries back the ceasefire initiative, citing the ceremony in Egypt and ongoing efforts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who will visit on Friday.
