Trump says deal with Canada close, but he holds ‘all the cards’
Trump said Canada is pushing for a deal as talks remain stalled and both countries keep imposing tariffs and retaliation on each side of the border.
On Friday, President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that "Canada is working very hard to make a deal with us," asserting the United States holds "all the cards" in ongoing negotiations.
Tensions between the nations escalated after trade negotiations collapsed in August, triggering new tariffs and retaliatory measures on both sides of the border.
The United States began collecting 50-percent duties on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods on Aug. 22, and Canada matched the tariffs dollar for dollar shortly after Labour Day.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is willing to hold out for a favorable agreement, noting that Ottawa does not care about the specific timing of a deal.
The impasse has prompted Carney to urge a shift away from Canada's largest trading partner, casting doubt on the long-term viability of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
