Video. Trump Calls Norway a ‘Shithouse Country’ over Nobel Peace Prize Snub
Trump tied the insult to his frustration over losing the Nobel Peace Prize and said he would not welcome immigrants from Norway.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump labeled Norway a "sh*thouse country" during a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, linking the insult to his frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump stated he would welcome immigrants from certain nations but not Norway "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize," recalling his earlier prediction of a win to First Lady Melania Trump.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre previously explained to Trump that the Norwegian Nobel Committee operates independently; the committee awarded the 2026 prize to South African jurist Navanethem Pillay on October 9.
Responding on Monday, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide maintained the committee's independence, while Trump's remarks echoed his January 2018 controversy involving Haiti and African nations, which drew bipartisan criticism.
Trump connected his Nobel expectations to claims he settled eight international conflicts, though independent fact-checkers have challenged this assertion; the committee recognized Pillay for her decades of work defending Human Rights.
Two of Norway's largest tourism players, DNT and Visit Norway, have published content on social media responding to Trump's statement that Norway is a "shit house country".
