The post renewed criticism from conservatives after Trump deleted an earlier AI image that many Christians called blasphemous.
- On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reposted an AI-generated image from an X account called "Irish for Trump," depicting Jesus embracing him, captioning it, "The Radical Left Lunatics might not like this, but I think it is quite nice!!!"
- The repost followed Trump's Monday deletion of an earlier AI image depicting him as a Christ-like healer after widespread criticism. Trump claimed to reporters he thought the image depicted him "as a doctor," and Speaker Mike Johnson said he asked Trump to delete the photo.
- Prominent conservative journalist Megan Basham labeled the imagery "OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy," while commentator Cam Higby, a long-time Trump supporter, stated he spends "8 hours a day" defending Trump but "will not defend blasphemy."
- Trump's recent attacks on Pope Leo XIV, calling him "WEAK on Crime," coincide with the image controversy. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a Trump ally, subsequently called his remarks about the Pope "unacceptable."
- These controversies risk alienating Catholic voters, who form about 20 per cent of the U.S. population, as sustained backlash could depress turnout among these critical religious constituencies in upcoming midterm races.
