Trump expected to award science medal to SpaceX's Elon Musk, Fox News reports
The awards recognize leaders in science and technology, and White House officials said 529 scientists and engineers have received the medal since 1959.
- On Thursday, President Donald Trump presented Elon Musk with the National Medal of Science at the White House's "Science: A New Golden Age" summit in Washington, honoring the SpaceX and Tesla CEO for engineering achievements in space exploration and intelligent systems.
- The award marks a dramatic reversal from May 2025, when Musk left Trump's Department of Government Efficiency after criticizing the "One Big Beautiful Bill" spending proposal, sparking a bitter public feud between the two.
- Before presenting medals to other recipients, White House science adviser Michael Kratsios presented Trump with a frame containing the National Medal of Science posthumously awarded to his uncle, John Trump, a 1983 MIT professor.
- Five other technology leaders joined Musk as recipients: Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su received the National Medal of Science, while Michael Dell and Satya Nadella received the Technology and Innovation medal.
- Musk now co-directs the Pentagon's "Project Meridian" study on future warfare and has adopted the administration's terminology, renaming SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI after Trump ordered federal agencies to replace "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence.
