Trump demands GOP staffer be fired for making McConnell look ‘out of it’
Trump said Robert Karem should be fired after a Senate hearing exchange that he said made Mitch McConnell look foolish and out of it.
President Donald Trump demanded Wednesday that congressional aide Robert Karem be fired for making Republican Senator Mitch McConnell "look foolish and completely out of it" during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing.
During Tuesday's hearing, McConnell attempted to conclude proceedings while Senators Tammy Baldwin, Jeanne Shaheen, and John Kennedy still had questions; Karem intervened to ensure they could participate.
Trump defended McConnell on Truth Social, claiming the 84-year-old leader was not confused but unaware why he was being interrupted. He accused Karem of "grandstanding" and having "tremendous" support from Democrats.
Journalists noted that Karem is a respected Capitol Hill national security staffer who served as a Department of Defense appointee under Trump, contradicting the president's "Never Trumper" label.
