The US Is in Another Asymmetric War in the Middle East

Iran has struck several U.S. sites, killing seven service members and exposing the reach of American bases that support combat and logistics missions.

  • In recent years, largely because of Iran's growing missile, drone, and proxy network, the US shifted toward more nimble basing along the western side of the Middle East region, according to Elizabeth Dent of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
  • Iraqi groups have hit US facilities more than 600 times during the war, while recent Iranian attacks killed three US service members in Jordan and one in Iraq last week.
  • Major hubs include Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base hosting the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, Kuwait's Ali al-Salem Air Base with the 386th, and the United Arab Emirates' Al Dhafra Air Base with the 380th.
  • Despite deadly attacks, Chatham House Middle East expert Neil Quilliam said he did not expect Gulf states to reduce the US military presence, "though DC itself, is likely to reconsider its military posture in the region."
  • Dent said Middle East bases "can support a wide range of missions from logistics, pre-positioning assets, refuelling, and of course combat operations," rejecting Tehran's claim that all sites are inherently offensive.
