Trump ally Rep. Troy Nehls says he’s retiring
Rep. Troy Nehls, a Texas Republican and former sheriff, will retire after six years in Congress to focus on family, joining five other Texas GOP members not seeking reelection.
- On Saturday, Rep. Troy E. Nehls announced he will not seek reelection after the current Congress, saying he will return home to focus on family after over 30 years in law enforcement and six years representing the 22nd Congressional District.
- Nehls's 22nd Congressional District, centered in Fort Bend and Brazoria counties, faces possible line changes as the announcement comes nine days before the Dec. 8 filing deadline for the 2026 primary ballot.
- He serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and chairs the Subcommittee on Aviation; his term runs until January 2027.
- Nehls's exit adds to a wave of Texas GOP departures ahead of 2026, joining five other Texas Republicans including Wesley Hunt of Houston and Chip Roy of Austin, with a short window before the Dec. 8 filing deadline.
- Nehls, a fervent supporter of President Donald Trump, said he called Trump before deciding and earlier this month joined the Texas GOP congressional delegation to publish the Jeffrey Epstein files after Trump encouraged the vote.
