Trump Runs Into Limits of Presidential Power on Lowering Prices
Trump’s framework aims to cut drug prices and increase insurer transparency amid 4.8 million Americans facing coverage loss after ACA subsidies expired, Urban.org reported.
- Last week, President Donald Trump unveiled a multipart proposal to `reduce premiums for millions`, lower drug prices, and increase transparency, the White House said.
- Last week the House passed a three-year extension of lapsed ACA subsidies that helped about 22 million Americans, while Urban.org estimates 4.8 million could lose coverage without them.
- The plan proposes sending federal premium subsidies directly to consumers and requires health insurance companies and hospitals that accept Medicare or Medicaid to publish clear pricing, profits and denial data.
- That choice means the Senate would need broader support to pass the measures, as the administration is not seeking reconciliation and Spencer Perlman said the policies may have minimal effect.
- Part of the framework builds on measures from his first term and asks Congress to codify `Most Favored Nation` drug-pricing agreements with more than a dozen manufacturers, while other economic proposals drew pushback.
