DHS Threatens to Stop International Flight Processing at Airports in ‘Sanctuary’ Cities
Mullin said the plan is not yet being implemented and could disrupt international travel, tourism and cargo at major airport hubs, industry groups warned.
On Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin reiterated his threat to remove Customs and Border Protection agents from airports in so-called "sanctuary cities" that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
Following protests at Newark's Delaney Hall detention center over the Memorial Day weekend, Mullin emphasized the need to protect employees at the facility, citing security risks as justification for the proposal.
More than a dozen airports in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York could face reduced staffing. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, warned airlines would cancel flights en masse, causing significant economic damage.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass dismissed the proposal as unrealistic, citing the 2026 FIFA World Cup beginning in weeks as incompatible with travel disruptions. Critics warn the move could prevent U.S. citizens from re-entering the country.
Despite the threats, officials confirm the proposal remains under consideration but has not yet been initiated. Critics continue questioning the political wisdom of creating what some describe as "apocalyptic" travel chaos in America.
