Tributes after British teenager dies while visiting Vietnam
Her family donated her organs, which were given to five critically ill Vietnamese patients, hospital officials said.
- On April 2, 19-year-old British tourist Orla Wates died at Hanoi's Viet Duc Friendship Hospital following a motorcycle crash on the Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam.
- The Ha Giang Loop is a 217-mile mountain road trip, though Vietnam is notorious for dangerous roads with more than 10,000 people killed in traffic accidents in 2024.
- Following her death, parents Andrew and Henrietta Wates chose to donate their daughter's organs, which Viet Nam News reported were transplanted into "five critically ill Vietnamese patients."
- Andrew Wates told the hospital that giving back to Vietnam was "very important" to his family, while Henrietta Wates added that Orla "was loving every minute" of her trip.
- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said consular staff are supporting the family, while a hospital representative praised the family's "deeply compassionate decision" to donate organs.
