Trial Begins for Nurse Accused in Fiery South LA Car Crash that Left 6 Dead
Prosecutors say data showed Nicole Linton’s Mercedes hit 130 mph before the fiery collision, and the defense says she was in a mental health crisis.
- Opening statements began Tuesday in the murder trial of Nicole Lorraine Linton, a traveling nurse accused of causing a high-speed crash at the Windsor Hills intersection of La Brea and Slauson avenues in August 2022 that killed six people.
- On Aug. 4, 2022, Linton allegedly drove her Mercedes-Benz through a red light at 130 mph, killing Asherey Ryan, her unborn child Armani Lester, her 11-month-old son Alonzo Quintero, boyfriend Reynold Lester, Nathesia Lewis, and Lynette Noble.
- Deputy District Attorney Brittany Vannoy argued Linton acted with "conscious disregard for human life," while defense attorney Jovan Blacknell countered she suffered a "medical emergency" and experienced a seizure that caused her to lose control.
- Emergency medical technician Isabel Schrama testified that Linton appeared confused after the crash, asking "Did I kill people?" while family members of victims rushed from the courtroom as prosecutors displayed graphic images of the collision's aftermath.
- Defense attorney Halim Dhanidina noted Linton has an out-of-state history of "profound mental health issues," as prosecutors argue she should have avoided driving given her medical background, making her culpability the trial's central question.
