Donaldson Trial on Schedule to Begin Next Week
Barristers said they are ready to proceed as Judge Paul Ramsey plans to begin jury selection next Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Judge Paul Ramsey confirmed at Newry Crown Court that the trial of former Democratic Unionist Party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, remains on track to begin with jury selection on May 26.
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson faces 18 charges including rape, while Lady Eleanor Donaldson faces five counts of aiding and abetting; proceedings were previously delayed twice due to medical issues following their arrest over two years ago at their County Down home.
Barristers for the Public Prosecution Service and the Defence confirmed they are ready to proceed to trial, though neither defendant was required to attend Tuesday's hearing at Newry Crown Court.
This Wednesday, Judge Paul Ramsey will preside over a hearing to review a completed medical report concerning Lady Eleanor Donaldson's health, which will determine further legal arguments before trial begins.
Following the allegations in 2024, Donaldson resigned as Democratic Unionist Party leader and was suspended from the party, while deputy Gavin Robinson assumed the role as the party returned to Stormont.
