Trial for man accused in Pearson gold heist set to hear more from key figure in case
Chaudhary says a doctored waybill helped move more than $22 million in gold and cash from Pearson airport, prosecutors allege.
Arsalan Chaudhary continued his testimony on Tuesday in the Brampton, Ont., trial of Parmpal Sidhu, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence in the 2023 heist.
On April 17, 2023, Peel regional police reported that 6,600 gold bars weighing more than 400 kilograms were stolen from the airport after the shipment arrived from Switzerland.
Previously sentenced to four years in prison, Chaudhary pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and was ordered to repay $22 million in restitution after taking 30 per cent of the gold bars.
Prosecutors allege that Sidhu, an Air Canada employee at the time, provided a doctored waybill enabling participants to collect more than $22 million in gold and currency from a Pearson cargo bay.
Expressing trauma from an alleged abduction in Pakistan, Chaudhary testified he has been held at Maplehurst Correctional Complex for three weeks without receiving prescribed medications including melatonin and vitamins.
