Husband, Wife Diagnosed with Breast Cancer a Year Apart Are Now Cancer-Free
Doctors say early detection helped the Eysters recover after breast cancer diagnoses one year apart.
In Forsyth County, Joan Eyster and Robert Eyster survived breast cancer after receiving diagnoses one year apart. The couple, married for 60 years, celebrated their anniversary this August while now cancer-free.
Joan was diagnosed in 2024, followed by Robert a year later. Robert possesses the BRCA2 gene, which increases breast cancer risk; he noted, "It didn't cross my mind until my wife had breast cancer."
Both patients utilized the same surgeon and oncologist at Novant Health, emphasizing early detection's importance. "We have to be our own advocates," Joan said, urging others to seek evaluation if symptoms arise.
For the couple, the traditional wedding vow "in sickness and in health" took on new meaning this year. "Praise the Lord," Robert said, "Because now we sit here cancer-free."
Now both cancer survivors, they hope their story helps others facing similar diagnoses. At 82 and 83 years old, they are feeling great; Joan urged, "Don't give up just because you get that diagnosis.
