Transgender players to be banned from women's events in Darts

The new eligibility rule follows a review and legal advice, while transgender players remain eligible for open events, the DRA said.

  • On Thursday, the Darts Regulation Authority enacted rules banning transgender players from women's tournaments, mandating that only biological females may compete in those events.
  • The DRA's decision followed a 2025 review commissioning a report from academic developmental biologist Emma Hilton, who concluded darts is a "gender-affected sport" with sex differences generating male advantage.
  • Noa-Lynn van Leuven, a 29-year-old Dutch player, said in an Instagram post: "Apparently, I just got retired- not by choice, but because I'm no longer allowed to compete."
  • The regulation mirrors recent International Olympic Committee policies restricting female events to biological females, prompting Van Leuven to call it a "huge hit for the trans community."
  • While banned from women's tournaments, Van Leuven remains eligible for open PDC events and stated she is "not done fighting," adding she is "going back to the drawing board.
