Train Derails in New Zealand's Capital, Eight Injured
Emergency crews evacuated all passengers and transported eight injured people to hospital after the train came off the tracks, officials said.
On Saturday, a train derailed near Khandallah Station in Wellington around 7:20 PM, with eight passengers transported to Wellington City Hospital suffering injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand and police evacuated all passengers from the train, while local resident Jo Hosie observed, "We've seen them all getting carted to the ambulance on the stretchers and that."
KiwiRail chief metro officer David Gordon confirmed the driver was among those hospitalized after hitting his head, saying, "You get a text like this coming through... which says 'derailment and passengers injured'- it's pretty gut-wrenching."
Services on the Johnsonville Line are suspended until further notice, with bus replacements running between Crofton Downs and Ngaio, as Greater Wellington Regional Council chair Daran Ponter confirmed KiwiRail, Transdev, and Rotem staff remain on site.
Standing upright but off the tracks on a runaway section, the train rested against a concrete block designed to stop further movement, though officials do not yet know the cause as locals reported hearing sounds like "thunder.
