‘At least 39 dead’ after two high-speed trains collide in Spain: Report
Emergency crews were deployed after the rear-end collision, and officials said at least 10 people died as service on the corridor was halted.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a Renfe AVE high-speed train and an Iryo service collided near Urda in Toledo province, causing two carriages to derail and plunge down an embankment; Adif suspended all Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail traffic.
The rear-end collision occurred at 8:54 a.m. at kilometer point 118, when one train struck the tail of the other while stopped between Mora, Orgaz, and Urda on the Madrid-Seville route.
Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the government of Castilla-La Mancha, confirmed at least 10 deaths, cautioning "that number will surely rise" as emergency crews deployed three helicopters and two mobile intensive care units to assist survivors.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cancelled his Wednesday engagements, expressing he was "deeply saddened" by the disaster, while regional president Emiliano Garcia-Page suspended government activities to travel to the crash site.
This collision renews scrutiny of Spain's high-speed network following a severe rail crisis in January 2026, when two fatal accidents occurred within 48 hours; the Adamuz tragedy, which killed 46 people, had previously triggered national safety investigations.
The accident has closed the rail line connecting Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia. A high-speed train collided with the rear of another train.
