Kolkata: Death Toll in Taratala Under-Construction Warehouse Collapse Rises to 16; Probe Intensifies
Rescuers found 33 workers and 17 remain in treatment as police arrested six people and suspended new commercial construction projects.
The death toll in Kolkata's Taratala warehouse collapse reached 16 on Saturday, officials confirmed, following the under-construction structure's collapse on Wednesday, June 24, near Brace Bridge.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suspended all ongoing commercial construction in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area on Thursday and ordered a comprehensive audit of building plans.
Police arrested six individuals, including the land lessee and structural engineer, while the Lalbazar Crime Branch investigates under the Kolkata Police Commissioner's supervision.
CREDAI Bengal President Sushil Mohta attributed the collapse to "illegal buildings, often built by ordinary contractors without supervision or expertise, using poor-quality materials."
National Disaster Response Force personnel and Indian Army are conducting "aggressive cutting" of debris to locate survivors, while a high-level committee headed by IAS officer Rajesh Pandey will submit findings within seven days.
