Traffic shifts to Sarnia: Ambassador Bridge no longer top truck border crossing

Higher Ambassador Bridge tolls and Gordie Howe delays have pushed about 2.1 million truck trips to Blue Water Bridge, officials said.

  • The Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia has overtaken the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor as the busiest Canada-U.S. commercial crossing, handling roughly 274,000 more commercial trucks than the Windsor route last year, according to data from the Bridge and Tunnel Operators Association.
  • High toll costs at the Ambassador Bridge, reaching up to $27 per axle, have driven freight traffic toward the Blue Water Bridge at $7 per axle, which also allows carriers to bypass urban congestion along Huron Church Road.
  • "Price sensitivity entered in the market for the supply chain," said Stephen Laskowski, President and CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the Ontario Trucking Association, as companies calculated cost savings over extra distance.
  • While the Ambassador Bridge did not respond to requests for comment, Federal Bridge Corporation Limited spokesperson Alexandre Gauthier stated that holding toll rates steady ensures the Blue Water Bridge remains a cost-effective choice.
  • The Gordie Howe International Bridge, expected to open this spring with a $12 per axle toll rate, will provide a highway-to-highway connection that may further reshape regional freight movement.
