The Hall of Famer will advise on NIL investment, marketing and player development while working unpaid and continuing his NBC analyst role.
On Wednesday, Basketball Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady joined Wagner College's men's basketball program as a strategic advisor to head coach Dwan McMillan. He will assist with marketing, player development, and Name, Image, and Likeness investment strategies.
The move unites 46-year-old McGrady with his son, Laymen, a freshman forward who transferred to Wagner last month after redshirting at Oral Roberts. McGrady called the role "personal" since he did not attend college himself.
Balancing this position with his media work for NBC and his podcast, "Cousins," with Vince Carter, McGrady will not receive a salary. He aims to help young athletes "master their game and life skills over time."
Competing in the Northeast Conference, the Seahawks finished last season 14-17 under first-year head coach McMillan. The Staten Island institution is where Dan Hurley, a two-time national champion at UConn, previously coached.
McGrady joins a growing trend of former NBA stars taking collegiate advisory roles. Shaquille O'Neal joined Sacramento State, Steph Curry returned to Davidson, Trae Young accepted a position at Oklahoma, and John Wall was named president of basketball operations at Howard.
