Toyota Opens New Battery Research Center Near Saline, Expanding EV Investment in Michigan
The 30,000-square-foot center will test batteries for Toyota’s North American network and support hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen and electric vehicles.
On Thursday, October 1, Toyota Motor Corp. opened a new $50 million, 30,000-square-foot battery research center in Saline Township, Michigan, serving as the automaker's central North American hub for battery development and evaluation.
Building on more than 50 years of engineering in Michigan, Toyota aims to shorten the distance between vehicle production, field data, and engineering teams while supporting its multi-pathway strategy for hybrids, hydrogen, and electric vehicles.
Through partnership with the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center, Toyota will allow researchers to access cutting-edge testing infrastructure, which company leaders say will help train the next generation of battery engineers and technicians.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell praised the investment, noting the facility reinforces Michigan's position in advanced automotive manufacturing and keeps the region at the cutting edge of innovation.
As Toyota expands its battery-electric lineup from two vehicles in 2025 to six in 2026, the new hub provides testing infrastructure to improve battery durability and support the company's growing electrified-vehicle operations across North America.
