Top Jalisco cartel leader 'El Jardinero' arrested in Mexico, minister says
Mexican special forces captured a top CJNG commander wanted in the United States, and officials said the arrest could disrupt cartel operations.
- On Monday, Mexican special forces arrested Audias Flores, known as "El Jardinero," in Nayarit, Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed. Flores was a top commander of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel .
- Flores controlled CJNG territory along the Pacific coast and was considered a potential successor to Nemesio Oseguera, alias "Mencho," who led the cartel until his death in February.
- The U.S. Treasury Department identified Flores as a "significant foreign narcotics trafficker," and a grand jury charged him with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin. The U.S. government offered a $5 million reward for his capture.
- Carlos Olivo, a former Drug Enforcement Administration assistant special agent in charge and CJNG expert, said the arrest "will have a bigger effect on CJNG operations than Mencho being taken out."
- The arrest marks a personal milestone for Garcia Harfuch, who blamed Oseguera for a 2020 assassination attempt that killed two bodyguards. Mexico faces heightened security scrutiny as it prepares to co-host the FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada.
