£232m Cocaine Haul Smuggled in Banana Shipment Discovered in Hertfordshire
Nine men were arrested after Border Force officers seized 2.9 tonnes of cocaine, which the National Crime Agency said would have fetched £232 million.
- On Thursday, August 6, Border Force officers seized 2.9 tonnes of cocaine at London Gateway Port in Essex, with the shipment worth an estimated £232 million hidden in banana boxes from South America.
- Following the port arrival, the container was delivered to a site near Buntingford, Hertfordshire, where officers acting on National Crime Agency intelligence swooped in and arrested nine men in connection with the operation.
- Dave Phillips, senior investigating officer at the National Crime Agency , said the seizure was "very significant" and "deprived the organised crime group behind it of huge profits." All nine arrested men have since been released on bail.
- The NCA stated it will "continue to combat the threat of class A drugs with partners at home, such as Border Force, and further upstream in source and transit countries."
- This incident follows a record-breaking summer in 2025, when the Home Office intercepted more than £1 billion of cocaine, while Border Force officers confiscated 15.6 tonnes between June and August last year.
