Toledo, Ohio, mayor says employee error caused chemical leak, lifts remaining evacuation orders
Officials said the ruptured tank leaked after an employee triggered a chemical reaction, and about 60 patients were treated at hospitals.
On Friday, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz lifted all remaining evacuation orders after officials determined a chemical tank leak at Tank Terminal was caused by employee error.
The rupture occurred Tuesday when an employee "introduced a temperature level to the tank in the process of trying to transfer the liquid," causing a chemical reaction at the facility.
About 60 patients arrived at ProMedica hospitals for treatment, though Dr. Brian Kaminski reported exposure levels did not reach "a long-term meaningful impact on human health."
Rescue Battalion Chief Blake Molnar stated, "At this time, we do feel confident that the site is safe," while Tank Transport has "accepted responsibility" for the incident.
Hundreds of residents were initially displaced, but Mayor Kapszukiewicz noted the chemical reaction has "run its course," allowing the community to return to "some level of normalcy.
