Tiny Caribbean island of Nevis to restore Alexander Hamilton museum with US funds
The grant will repair weather-damaged woodwork and preserve documents and exhibits at the museum honoring Alexander Hamilton.
The United States awarded $245,000 this month to restore Hamilton House on Nevis, honoring founding father Alexander Hamilton as America celebrates its 250th anniversary.
Born on Nevis in the mid-18th century, Hamilton spent his childhood in Charlestown, where the Georgian stone building was originally constructed around 1680.
Constant repairs are required for the historic structure, as salty air and time have damaged the woodwork; the building was last restored in 1983 after an 1840 earthquake destroyed it.
On Wednesday, Nevis Premier Mark Brantley expressed gratitude for the funds, stating locals have tried "valiantly" to preserve important historical monuments on the island.
Brantley believes Hamilton remains "an iconic figure" whose legacy demonstrates what a small island can contribute to the founding of the United States, inspiring future generations.
