Tinubu’s 2023 Electricity Pledge Taken Out Of Context, Says APC Campaign Council
Dele Alake says the administration has metered more than 1.5 million customers and is still working to settle legacy power debts.
- On Sunday, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson Dele Alake defended President Bola Tinubu's 2023 electricity pledge, urging Nigerians to assess the promise alongside his administration's interventions and original qualification regarding potential failure.
- Critics, including the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council , recently accused the administration of failing to deliver stable power, arguing rising tariffs and persistent grid collapses contradict the President's 2023 campaign promise.
- Defending the administration's record, Alake cited the Electricity Act 2023, the Presidential Metering Initiative metering over 1.5 million customers, and a N4tn bond programme that raised more than N1.2tn to settle debts owed to 21 generation companies.
- Infrastructure efforts include modernizing the Osogbo Grid Control Centre, built more than 60 years ago, and upgrading Transmission Company of Nigeria substations, though Alake acknowledged that resolving the power sector crisis is ongoing work.
- Seeking a second term, Tinubu will present his power sector scorecard to Nigerians and explain outstanding challenges, fulfilling his condition to provide adequate reasons if he failed to deliver the promised electricity.
