A couple of years ago, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper wrote in his recent memoir, President Trump asked if the military could quietly fire “some Patriot missiles” to destroy illicit drug labs in Mexico. This was an awful idea. Patriot missiles are defensive weapons, and attacking a neighboring nation with Tomahawks is an extreme step that would have severe diplomatic repercussions.
