TikTok posts in alleged support of Islamic State lead to arrest of Quebec man
Police say the investigation began after an online tip, and investigators are seeking a terrorism peace bond that could add monitoring conditions.
On Thursday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested 40-year-old Mohamed Ali Ben Chaoua at his home in Que. after investigating his alleged support for the Islamic State on TikTok.
The investigation began in March 2025 after the National Security Information Network received a tip regarding a TikTok user sharing content linked to the Islamic State.
Police currently lack sufficient evidence to lay criminal charges but are seeking a terrorism peace bond under the Criminal Code to impose monitoring conditions and de-escalation tools.
Ben Chaoua is scheduled to appear Friday at the Quebec City courthouse, where a judge will evaluate conditions such as weapons prohibitions or residence requirements.
Erique Gasse warned that sharing content linked to terrorist groups can lead to charges in Canada. "It's not only bombs and guns," Gasse said, emphasizing online threats merit intervention.
