UK weather: Thunderstorms ahead - but temperatures are set to remain high

ENGLAND, JUL 17 – Yellow weather warnings cover much of England with up to 90mm of rain expected in some areas, increasing flash flood risks on hard, dry ground, the Met Office said.

  • Thunderstorms and heavy rain will impact much of England from July 18 into the weekend, accompanied by high temperatures and humidity.
  • The arrival of a low-pressure system moving north from northern France will bring torrential rain, lightning, hail, and gusty winds starting Friday morning in southern England.
  • Yellow weather warnings cover most of England for flash flooding, travel disruption, power cuts, and surface water flooding, with risks increasing due to dry ground and heavy rainfall rates.
  • Meteorologist Alex Burkill noted the south and east have some sunshine and dry spells, but high humidity and heat may become uncomfortable for parts of the country.
  • Temperatures will peak around 27C on July 18 before easing across the UK on Sunday as unsettled conditions with showers and thunderstorms continue into early next week.
