Irish Language Heist Thriller Aontas Receives Oscar Nod

On Friday, the Irish Film & Television Academy selected the Irish-language thriller Aontas as Ireland's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
Directed by Damian McCann and written by McCann and Sarah Gordon, the heist thriller features Carrie Crowley, Bríd Brennan, and Eva-Jane Gaffney as three unlikely thieves robbing a rural Irish Credit Union in reverse chronology.
Following successful Irish-language films like the Oscar-nominated An Cailín Ciúin and Oscar-shortlisted Kneecap , McCann thanked funders including TG4 and the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, which has backed his work for twenty years.
IFTA Chief Executive Áine Moriarty praised the film as an "intriguing and clever twist on the classic bank heist narrative," while McCann remarked, "I was bringing some soggy washing in out of the rain when the news arrived—what a turnaround of a day!".
The Academy will announce the International Feature Film shortlist on December 15, 2026, followed by the final five nominees on January 21, 2027, before the 99th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 14, 2027.
