First subjects for new V-level qualification revealed

New V-levels will provide rigorous vocational alternatives to A-levels, with initial subjects including digital, finance, and education, aiming to reduce youth unemployment and boost skills.

  • From September next year, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson unveiled V-levels equivalent to one A-level in education and early years, finance and accounting, and digital.
  • Aimed at preparing young people for modern jobs, the reforms seek to end 'snobbery' and support Sir Keir Starmer's target to engage two-thirds of young people by 25.
  • Designed with employers, V-levels will meet real job needs while Sir Ian Bauckham, chief regulator at Ofqual, said they will be 'well-designed'; the Sixth Form Colleges Association welcomed retaining BTecs during the phase-in.
  • From next year, the Department for Education will introduce two-year Occupational Certificate and one-year Foundation Certificate qualifications for lower-attaining 16-year-olds, supporting progression to work, apprenticeships, and further study.
  • From 2028, the V-level rollout timeline will add subjects like business, care, construction, engineering, health, legal, sales, and sports, replacing Level 3 BTecs and overlapping legacy qualifications from 2027, the Department for Education says.
