Thousands without power as cyclone sits off WA coast
The cyclone caused damaging winds up to 120 km/h and power outages affecting nearly 2,000 properties, with emergency warnings and evacuations issued for multiple coastal communities.
- On Monday, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mitchell crossed the coast near Shark Bay around 4pm and was downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone about 1am on Tuesday by the Bureau of Meteorology.
- Cyclone Mitchell hugged the coast as it tracked south, reaching category 3 at its peak and passing Dampier, with winds up to 155 km/hr, forecaster Patch Clapp said.
- Horizon Power reported 1,675 Exmouth customers without electricity as gusts up to 120 km/h cut supply to almost 2,000 properties.
- On Monday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services urged residents in the warning zone to shelter now, opening evacuation centres at Exmouth Shire Hall, Carnarvon PCYC, and Onslow Multi Purpose Centre, with 20 call-outs and no injuries reported.
- Senior meteorologist Angus Hines warned `This weather system is going to be with us for a number of days as it's going to slide southwards through the interior of Western Australia as a weakening, decaying weather system between Monday and Wednesday`, and flood risks will persist through Tuesday as the system weakens across the southern Gascoyne.
