Thousands rattled by earthquake in central-west NSW
Over 2,000 felt reports were filed as the quake shook homes for about 30 seconds and prompted concern near the Cadia gold mine.
- A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck just south of Orange in Central West NSW at 8:19 PM on Tuesday. Geoscience Australia confirmed it as the largest earthquake on record in the region, occurring at a depth of five kilometres.
- The region near Mount Canobolas is described as a 'cluster' location of seismic activity. The previous record for the area was a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in 2017, making Tuesday's tremor a significant departure from historical norms.
- More than 2,000 reports of the earthquake have been received, spanning from Forbes to Sydney and as far south as Batemans Bay. Houses in Orange shook for approximately 30 seconds during the tremor.
- Blayney Shire Mayor Bruce Reynolds, living 12km from the epicentre, described it as the biggest earthquake he has felt in the area. Newmont Cadia mine operators confirmed safety procedures functioned effectively following the tremor.
- Geoscience Australia Senior Seismologist Professor Phil Cummins noted aftershocks would not be surprising, though they would tend to be smaller than the initial shake. He emphasized that 'felt' reports help estimate future earthquake strength.
