Thousands of Gatwick Passengers Were Stranded After Sinkholes Were Found on a Bridge
Engineers found multiple sinkholes on a bridge, forcing a safety closure that halted services and left passengers facing delays of up to 90 minutes.
On Sunday, the discovery of sinkholes near a railway bridge in Purley caused the suspension of all train services to Gatwick Airport and Brighton, forcing Network Rail to immediately close the lines.
Engineers discovered a "number of sinkholes" during planned maintenance outside Purley, finding that ballast was falling through gaps and making the track unstable.
Stranded holidaymakers faced significant delays, with some queuing for over 2 hours for replacement buses, as the train operator warned alternative routes will be "extremely busy."
Services remain suspended until Monday morning, though Thameslink confirmed unused Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express tickets will be accepted at no additional cost tomorrow, Monday, June 15, 2026.
Work continues on the bridge to facilitate repairs, though operators cannot yet confirm normal service resumes Monday, as Network Rail stated, "We're sorry to passengers who have been impacted by this and we're working to safely open the railway as quickly as possible.
