Thousands gather for Kyiv's largest Pride march since start of full-scale war
Organizers said the march pressed for civil partnerships and hate-crime protections as Ukraine’s LGBTQ+ community sought legal recognition during wartime.
- On Sunday, June 21, around 5,000 participants joined the annual KyivPride march in central Kyiv, marking the largest turnout since Russia's full-scale war began in February 2022.
- Organizers demanded the Ukrainian government recognize civil partnerships for military personnel and civilians, amid the Verkhovna Rada's consideration of a new Civil Code that excludes same-sex unions.
- A 31-year-old soldier with the call sign 'Psikh' said recognizing civil partnerships would allow partners to visit each other in hospitals and share property. "As a service member, it is very important to me that rights and partnerships are, above all, for all of Ukraine," he stated.
- Around 1,000 nationalist counter-protesters rallied nearby, separated by heavy police presence, with participants in the 'March of Tradition' and the 'March to Protect Family, Children, and Ukraine' chanting slogans and stomping on rainbow flags.
- Although a 2024 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll found over 70% of Ukrainians support equal rights for LGBTQ+ people, critics argue such efforts conflict with traditional culture, while LGBT rights remain central to Ukraine's European Union accession negotiations.
