'Disregard for Our Safety' | New Jersey Half-Marathon Runners Race Half-Underwater During Flooding
More than 4 inches of rain flooded parts of the course, and runners questioned why organizers kept the 8 a.m. race going.
Competitors in the Racefaster Half-Marathon in Paramus, New Jersey, unexpectedly raced through waist-level floodwaters on Sunday after the area received more than 4 inches of rain.
Paramus recorded 4.92 inches of rain, the highest in Bergen County, causing portions of Routes 17 and 208 to flood across North Jersey.
A photo from Fair Lawn showed a woman waiting atop her car for rescue, while Ridgewood resident Helen said, "We live in Ridgewood and many of our friends were running this race."
Zac Clark, a contestant on "The Bachelorette," posted a video saying, "Bro, this is nuts," while other runners questioned why organizers began the race at 8 a.m.
By Monday morning, authorities reopened the flooded roadways. The storm marked the latest in a series of summer flooding events affecting North Jersey infrastructure.
