This Court Became a Symbol of Trump's Immigration Crackdown. Now It's at the Center of a House Race
The race centers on competing responses to migrant arrests and court oversight, with Lander arrested twice and Goldman saying conditions have improved.
In the Democratic primary for a Lower Manhattan congressional seat, Rep Dan Goldman and Comptroller Brad Lander are clashing over strategies at 26 Federal Plaza, which represents President Donald Trump's deportation campaign.
Goldman leverages his office to demand federal access and connect immigrants with services, while Lander acts as a court observer and protester, attempting to accompany migrants past agents.
Lander, running with support from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was arrested twice at the building and rejected a deal ending his misdemeanor obstruction case in six months, opting for trial instead.
Goldman dismissed Lander's efforts as performative, telling The Associated Press he provides information through oversight and characterized his approach as substantive compared to protests.
The immigration court now serves as a central battleground in the closely watched Democratic primary, with both candidates aiming to prove effectiveness in challenging federal deportation efforts before June.
