Thieves Steal 1,000 Pounds of Grapes From Vineyard
Lee Dyer said the loss would cut production by about 400 bottles and reported the theft to Norfolk Police.
On September 28, Winbirri Vineyard owner Lee Dyer discovered thieves stole 500kg of Bacchus grapes, stripping two 120-metre rows at his property in Surlingham, Norfolk.
The stolen crop represents a year's work for the family-run business, equating to 400 bottles of wine that cannot be recovered; Dyer believes the theft was committed by a "good picking crew... used to doing what they were doing."
Nick Watson, chair of WineGB East, described the incident as "unprecedented," while Dyer noted that previous thefts occurred "on a microscale," including attempts last year involving individuals with electric bikes and trailers.
Norfolk Police confirmed receiving a report of the incident, which occurred between September 20 and 22, and Dyer is now considering additional security measures including motion-activated cameras.
Industry experts emphasize the UK wine sector is "highly monitored," making it difficult to sell stolen grapes without proper paperwork, and Dyer hopes this publicity deters the individuals from repeating the crime.
