They make American flags. Here's what it means to them
Annin Flagmakers says its Virginia workers have made flags for Lincoln’s inauguration, Apollo 11 and the bicentennial.
Founded as the oldest and largest manufacturer of the Star-Spangled Banner, Annin Flagmakers in South Boston, Va., has produced flags for major historical moments since the Civil War, including President Lincoln's inauguration and the Apollo 11 mission.
Inside the 200,000-square-foot factory, seamstresses sew red and white cotton strips during long shifts. Worker Amber Davis, 31, says employees prioritize the craft, noting, "Leave politics, money and religion."
Partnering with America250, the company distributes hundreds of thousands of handheld flags at community celebrations and sporting events through the "America Waves" program.
Despite its history as a unifying symbol, the flag has increasingly represented political alienation, with various groups raising it to display pride or protest.
Created in 1997, the original Juneteenth flag features a bursting star and commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free.
