Two Missing in Alhaurin El Grande After Flash Flooding
A multi-agency search involving around 100 volunteers continues after two men went missing when their van was swept away by floodwaters with over 134 liters per square meter recorded.
- On Sunday, December 28, the Guardia Civil and organised volunteers intensified the search in Alhaurín el Grande for two local men in their 50s after their van was found 1.6 kilometres downstream.
- AEMET's red alert came after over 134 litres per square metre fell, causing flooding and river overflows across the Guadalhorce Valley and Costa del Sol with challenging high river flows and muddy terrain.
- Divers, canine units and Civil Protection personnel are joined by drones and helicopters aiding ground teams from La Campiüela to La Pagaora, with around 100 volunteers involved.
- Search teams confirmed this Sunday afternoon that the body of one of the two residents was found in the river Fahala near Cártama, while the search continues for the other missing man from a Guardia Civil command post with a 6.30pm briefing planned.
- The town hall of Alhaurín el Grande confirmed the search will continue and urged the public to avoid crossing watercourses, with Mayor Anthony Bermúdez calling for caution around swollen rivers.
